Uma geneticista holandesa se tornou a primeira mulher a ter o seu DNA mapeado, um processo que está ficando mais fácil e barato graças à evolução dos equipamentos.
Marjolein Kriek, 34 anos, é apenas a quinta pessoa a ter sua informação genética mapeada para estudo científico. Ela acha que já era hora. "Estou um pouco surpresa por ninguém mais ter pensado em sequenciar uma mulher", disse ela em entrevista. "De início era mais uma questão de 'dá para fazer?', depois foi uma questão de 'se vamos fazer, tem de ser numa mulher'."
A equipe do Centro Médico da Universidade de Leiden levou nove meses para mapear o genoma de Kriek, a um custo aproximado de 40 mil euros (62 mil dólares).
Para fazer o primeiro mapeamento de genoma humano, publicado em 2001, o governo dos EUA investiu 300 milhões de dólares, numa pesquisa de cinco anos.
Tanto o Projeto Genoma Humano quanto a empresa do pesquisador Craig Venter usaram o DNA de várias pessoas para mapear o genoma humano.
Mas poucos indivíduos - como Venter e James Watson, um dos descobridores da estrutura de dupla-hélice do DNA, em 1953 - fizeram o mapeamento de seus genomas específicos.
Várias empresas competem para desenvolver máquinas que permitam sequenciamentos mais baratos, rápidos e eficientes, o que poderia ampliar a quantidade de material genético disponível e também ser usado em diagnósticos médicos.
Neste ano, uma empresa dos EUA disse estar trabalhando numa máquina que seria capaz de "escrever" o genoma inteiro de uma pessoa em quatro minutos, a um custo de apenas mil dólares.
Como nos outros casos, os pesquisadores mapearam as sequências do DNA de Kriek várias vezes até obterem uma cópia exata.
Após seis meses de análise, seu mapa genético será publicado para o uso de outros cientistas.
